Dan Wieden built the agency that made Nike. When asked about his creative process, he talked about slime mold.

Slime mold exists as individual cells that can aggregate into something smarter when conditions require it. The cells don't merge into a blob. They stay themselves and become intelligent together.

This is how the best creative work happens.

Most people fear AI will flatten creativity. Make everything sound the same. They're using it wrong.

AI isn't the organism. You are.

The tools are individual cells. One generates images. Another researches. One helps with structure. Another challenges assumptions. Each does something distinct.

But you're the one aggregating them. Your taste creates the collective intelligence. Your judgment responds to the creative problem. The AI doesn't have a brain dictating what good looks like. You do.

Slime mold finds the shortest path through a maze not because any cell is smart. The aggregate system responds to the environment. You respond to creative problems using tools that extend your pattern recognition.

The magic comes from differences between cells. If you use every tool the same way, you get the same output. If you ask AI to be the brain instead of the cells, you lose.

The question is whether you can stay yourself while you do it.

Most people let the tools shape the work. They prompt once and ship the output. They optimize for the tool's strengths instead of their own vision.

The best creative work happens when you know what you want before you touch the tool. When you use ten different approaches to solve one problem. When you combine outputs in ways the individual tools never could.
