A participatory installation at Art Basel Miami Beach 2025 in the Zero 10 sector. Three self-checkout kiosks and an online portal let visitors pay whatever they want — starting at $1 — for a printed receipt. The receipt is the artwork.
Each dollar prints as a separate line item, so the more you pay, the longer your receipt. A seed phrase printed on each receipt unlocks a non-transferable NFT on Ethereum, literalizing the critique that NFT buyers purchase "just receipts."
A split-flap kinetic display started at -$74,211 — the exact, itemized cost of the booth, fabrication, shipping, equipment, labor, and travel — and updated in real-time with each contribution. Transparency as both mechanism and critique.
5,837 receipts were collected across onchain, online, and in-person interactions, averaging $11.41 each, totalling $188,917 in revenue and $114,706 in net profit. The complete installation was sold to X-Museum, Beijing, China.
The entire system — payment processing, kiosk software, receipt printing, and smart contracts — is open source.
